Reflections of SoulHAVEN by Asile Patin
What does it feel like to spend ten days somewhere you’re allowed to simply be?
Asile K. Patin’s reflection on her time at the SoulHaven Artists in Residency program takes us to Lake City, Colorado, where she spent ten days surrounded by mountains, golden trees, stars, nature, and a community of BIPOC artists and activists.

There was forest bathing, journaling, long conversations, s’mores around the fire, stargazing, and plenty of time to sleep, read, rest, and create whenever inspiration struck. One of the most meaningful parts of the experience came when Asile realized just how deeply calm she felt. Later, lying under the Milky Way with her new friends, she found herself thinking about how much her younger self would have wished for exactly this moment.
Her reflection is warm, funny, thoughtful, and full of those little moments that make you understand why the experience stayed with her long after she returned home. She writes about reconnecting with her senses, rediscovering her identity as an artist, and finding a sense of peace, community, and freedom that she didn’t realize she had been missing.
